Today, August 28, “Bestest Friend,” a previously unreleased Prince recording from 2012, has officially arrived as part of Timeless, a new 10-track collection of rare and unreleased material from throughout the artist’s career. The song has a big, smooth arrangement, with layered horns and guitar giving it a rich, almost cinematic quality. According to Stereogum, the track is especially notable for the way its guitar and horn parts play off each other.

The track was recorded at Paisley Park in 2012, with Chris James involved in the original recording and later mixing and mastering work for the collection. There’s something pretty cool about hearing Prince in 2012 through a song that never made it onto an album during his lifetime. “Bestest Friend” doesn’t sound like an unfinished experiment that was pulled out of a vault just because it existed. It’s a fully realized, carefully arranged soul song, with Prince’s vocals sitting comfortably inside the lush production.

That makes Timeless less like a traditional Prince album and more like a trip through his creative history. You’re hearing different versions of Prince across almost 40 years, from early recordings to music created shortly before his death. Somehow, “Bestest Friend” still manages to stand out. For fans, that’s probably the best possible outcome when a previously unheard Prince song finally emerges from the Vault.
