During their co-headlining Space-Ball The Tour with Fastball this fall Spacehog will strike off on their own for a series of solo shows, including one at Gramercy Theater on October 5th.
Spacehog are an English rock band formed in New York City in 1994 by former Leeds residents, vocalist and bassist Royston Langdon, guitarists Anthony Langdon and Richard Steel, and drummer Johnny Cragg. In 1995 (after signing with Sire Records), they released their debut album, Resident Alien, which included the band’s first hit, “In the Meantime,” as the opening track, setting the scene for the album’s intergalactic theme and reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart before the album achieved gold status less than a year later. In 1998, they released The Chinese Album, a concept album that took an artsier approach and was originally intended to be the soundtrack for the movie, Mungo City (aka The Chinese Movie), that ultimately was never made. In 2001, Spacehog released The Hogyssey and disbanded soon after touring in support of the album with The Black Crowes and Oasis.
Reuniting in 2008 with a set of reunion shows, they released their latest album, the maturely beautiful As It Is On Earth, in 2013 through their independent label, Hog Space. Despite their rocky history, Spacehog has consistently proven to be a force to be reckoned with. Drawing influence from glam-rock legends like David Bowie and T. Rex, the band offers up driving grunge with a bright glam-rock twist with a sound defined by its massive distorted guitars and cinematic flourishes brought to life by huge vocals, infectiously bouncy grooves, and catchy chorus hooks. Known for their entertaining stage-theatrics including Spiders from Mars-eque costumes, face-melting, monitor-perched guitar solos, and Cragg lighting his gong on fire, Spacehog never fails to deliver a hugely memorable performance.
