On June 20, Wilco performed at Forest Hills Stadium on their 24-date U.S. summer tour, supported by Yo La Tengo. This marked Wilco’s second headlining appearance at the venue.
Yo La Tengo, from Hoboken, New Jersey, delivered a 55-minute set of their signature indie rock. The audience responded warmly to their performance, with familiar favorites such as “Autumn Sweater” and “You Can Have It All” landing especially well.
Wilco took the stage at 7:30 p.m., performing with a stripped-down setup centered on guitars and piano, with no visuals, placing full emphasis on the music. Forest Hills Stadium’s strict 10:00 p.m. curfew, enforced due to its residential surroundings, helped shape the pacing of the evening.
With more than three decades of experience, Wilco has built a loyal following since forming in 1994. They opened with the electric guitar-driven “Handshake Drugs” before transitioning into the acoustic “If I Ever Was a Child.” The band leaned heavily on earlier material throughout the set, including “Box Full of Letters” from 1995 and “It’s Just That Simple” from their debut album A.M., released the same year.
The band’s live approach often mirrors the loose, exploratory energy of jam-oriented acts, with extended arrangements and Jeff Tweedy’s signature guitar work expanding many of the songs. The 25-song set held the attention of the 13,000-strong crowd throughout the night, with Tweedy frequently engaging the audience and recalling the band’s previous Forest Hills performance during a storm in 2021.
Although Wilco is typically categorized as indie rock or alt-country, their sound resists easy definition. Songs like “Annihilation” highlight their pop-leaning instincts, while “Evicted” reflects their folk influences. The first half of the set leaned toward more upbeat, acoustic-tinged material, while the latter portion expanded into longer instrumental sections, extended solos, and atmospheric passages. Though not structured into formal acts, the set was paced with clear intention.
In the final stretch of the show, Yo La Tengo returned to the stage for the encore, joining Wilco for a collaborative closing run. The combined performance of “California Stars,” “Falling Apart,” “I Heard You Looking,” and “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” added an expansive, improvisational energy to the end of the night.
Throughout the evening, Wilco reinforced their status as a seasoned touring act, drawing from a deep catalog while maintaining a strong connection with the audience. The result was a performance that resonated with longtime fans and newcomers alike, capturing the spirit of a summer night at Forest Hills Stadium.
