Welcome (back) to the Black Parade! The legendary emo band, My Chemical Romance, recently embarked on the second run of their massive stadium tour for the 20th anniversary of their iconic album, The Black Parade, with support from a wide range of bands from Sleater-Kinney to Babymetal. The North American leg of the tour kicks off on August 9th at Citi Field where the band will be joined by Franz Ferdinand.
Formed in 2001 in Newark by lead vocalist, Gerard Way, in response to the 9/11 attacks, the band soon grew to its full size adding drummer Matt Pelissier, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero, and bassist Mikey Way. They quickly gained a loyal online fanbase with the release of their debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. Their success only grew from there.
If MCR hadn’t already made it with their sophomore album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (which skyrocketed them into the mainstream with singles “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” and “Helena”), 2006’s The Black Parade took them somewhere else entirely. A rock opera on par with Green Day’s American Idiot and Pink Floyd’s The Wall, the album went multi-platinum and solidified MCR as the leaders of 3rd wave emo with their combination of goth-leaning rock and dark, comic-book-inspired storytelling. The grand scale of the album is embodied in the exposition-filled title track “Welcome to the Black Parade,” which starts with one of the most recognized piano intros in rock music and an on-theme marching snare roll before opening up into a huge spectacle replete with thundering drums and bright, driving guitars. The Black Parade World Tour embraced the album’s dark themes with matching black marching band uniforms and dramatic stage theatrics like Gerard Way being wheeled on stage in a hospital bed.
In 2013, the band went on an indefinite hiatus to the disappointment of many. However, they returned with a bang in 2019 with a Halloween reunion announcement and a massive surprise comeback concert at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in LA in December. The show was a huge success, grossing $1.5 million dollars in ticket sales and becoming the largest concert in the history of The Shrine. The show preceded a full reunion tour that was delayed until 2022 because of Covid. In 2025, the band began the massive Long Live The Black Parade tour for the 20th anniversary of the album, which upped the dramatic ante, featuring complex lore and theatrics to accompany a front-to-back run through of the iconic album at every show. The tour continues into 2026 and promises to keep the energy alive and deliver a performance for the ages.
