Flying Lotus announces two night residency in New York City! The genre spanning artist will be performing two shows per night with a live band at Blue Note Jazz Club on July 8th and 9th.
Flying Lotus, or Steve Ellison, is a music producer, artist, and director who has had an immense influence on the course of 21st century music. Born in Los Angeles in 1983, Ellison was surrounded by artistic inspiration, drawing from the music he heard in the city around him and from his familial relation to musical legends, Marilyn McLeod and Alice Coltrane. Quickly immersing himself in the local music scene, he became LA’s famed experimental hip hop and electronic night club, Low End Theory’s, breakout star in the late 2000s. The club allowed him to hone his ability to incorporate jazz, hip-hop, and nebulous, futuristic elements that would become the defining traits of his music. The club also inspired him to create his own music label, Brainfeeder, through which he has created music with Grammy-recognized artists such as Thundercat, George Clinton, Kamasi Washington, and Hiatus Kaiyote.
Outside of his work with Brainfeeder, Ellison released albums through Warp Records with iconic names like David Lynch and Erykah Badu and produced on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly among many other seminal records, earning him multiple grammy award wins. Ellison is also an established director, directing, producing, and composing for such projects as V/H/S 99, Ash, Yasuke, and They Call Me Magic. This visual creativity shines through in his live performances which are praised for their sophisticated visual projections, 3D animations, and avant-garde light displays. Arriving at the 20th anniversary of his first full-length album, 1983, these Blue Note shows offer a rare opportunity to witness the full arc of his career.
