Finding beauty in trauma
Satya has spent years crafting a sound that pulls from folk, soul, jazz and Americana without fully settling into any one genre. After several EPs and singles, her debut album Yellow House arrives as her most personal project yet. Written about childhood experiences growing up in an abusive household, the album uses a physical location as a symbol of the memories that continue to follow her. The result is an emotional record that explores pain, healing and self-discovery through thoughtful songwriting and strong production.
The project leans heavily into folk and country influences while incorporating elements of jazz and soul. Soft acoustic guitars, gentle percussion and subtle arrangements create a warm and atmospheric sound. This allows Satya’s voice to remain the focal point throughout the record. Her singing is consistently compelling, carrying a rich tone that perfectly complements the subject matter.
There is a smoothness to the production that makes the album flow naturally from beginning to end, almost feeling like a single continuous story. However, that consistency becomes a slight weakness. The calmer instrumentation and slower pacing can occasionally cause songs to blend together, making the middle portion of the album feel somewhat repetitive. Even so, the quality of the performances keeps the project engaging.
The writing is where Yellow House truly shines. Satya approaches difficult subjects with honesty and maturity, discussing childhood trauma without ever making the album feel hopeless. Instead, there is a constant sense of growth and healing woven throughout the record. Her lyrics are rich with imagery and detail, painting vivid pictures of both the house itself and the emotions attached to it.
The album’s title track serves as the clearest example of this. It revisits the home that inspired the record, blending darker memories with moments of hope and reflection. The song’s gradual build mirrors the emotional journey of the album itself and Satya’s performance gives every line additional weight. Additionally, the repeated line, “I’m not going home again,” captures the album’s central theme in its most affecting form, leading to a devastatingly beautiful song. It is easily the most impactful track on the project.
Overall, Satya puts together an impressive debut that succeeds because of its sincerity. While the production can become slightly repetitive over the course of the album, the powerful singing and thoughtful lyricism consistently leave an impact. The emotional writing allows the project to feel complete from beginning to end.
