It’s complete with slow-motion line dancing, bubblegum and footage of the band members chasing chickens. German atmospheric rock band Darkness Falls has released a brand new video for their song, “Hazy.”
The video, which features vocalist and keyboard player Josephine Philip’s father, is a slow-motion, sinister farmhouse epic, showing band members chasing after chickens in a dimly-lit barn and popping bubblegum in the dark. Josephine’s dad is featured prominently in a cowboy hat, coming out of the shadows of a rural farmhouse scene. It’s not until about halfway through the video that we realize what’s going on; he’s on his way to a country line dance, featuring a group of farm residents dancing around an empty barn. The thing that makes the song and the video stand out is that the music style doesn’t agree very much with the video’s dynamic and atmosphere. But that’s also what makes it interesting and even comical. The brooding, slow, dark music is in direct contrast with the slow-motion images of middle aged rural folks coming together for a toe-tapping good time. But on the other hand, the dark colors and lack of smiles on the faces of the residents makes the video seem spookier and even a little off.
The band says they wanted to create a video where Josephine’s dad was dancing, but wanted to keep the dark, mysterious atmosphere and the feeling that something was about to happen. In that sense, it’s clear that they achieved their goal.
The German band produced its debut album Alive in Us in 2011, after forming in 2009. On its Facebook page, Darkness Falls says a new album will be following sometime this year.
