Canadian electrofunk duo, Chromeo, consists of David Macklovitch (Dave 1), and Patrick Gemayel (P-Thugg) who have been friends since childhood. They jokingly describe themselves as “the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture.” Around the age of 15, Macklovitch’s younger brother A-Trak started winning the Disco Mix Club Championships with his mixes and later became the World Champion in 1997. A-Trak’s success influenced Dave 1 and P-Thugg to start producing hip hop together under the name of Chromeo.
In 2004, Chromeo released their debut album, She’s in Control. Their album had favorable reviews, but Dave 1 claims the album didn’t ‘blow up.’ However, their hit single “Needy Girl” became a worldwide hit. According to Dave 1, “The song was like a musical passport. That song went all around the world and DJs played it everywhere.”
After a three year break, they released their second album, Fancy Footwork, which received positive reviews. Chromeo’s third album, Business Casual (2010), held their single “Night by Night.” The music video following its release has received over 1 million views on YouTube. In 2013, Chromeo announced their fourth studio album, White Women, with a trailer video featuring one of their latest singles “Over Your Shoulder.” The set date for the album’s release is May 12. In the meantime, watch the band perform their new music live at Stubb’s BBQ.
