A tribute to Gary Young.
This soundtrack was created to accompany the documentary by the same name following the life of Gary Young, the drummer of the band Pavement. The film was directed by Jed I. Rosenberg and features Young, alongside the rest of the band.
The score begins with “Wink & A Nod,” a whimsical and electronic piece from Edward W. Dahl. This track features recitation, ending with the words “My job, in a sense, was to wreck fucking havoc.” The words sharply contrast the gentle synth notes, but certainly hint toward the following songs.
The second track, “Achtung!” by The Authorities, starts leaning heavily into punk as it begins off with a heavy drum and electric guitar combo that quickly speeds the tempo up. This song keeps racing well into the vocals, “I don’t wanna go, I don’t wanna die, / Let’s just drop the bomb this time!” The song is driven and upbeat, with angry lyrics. This punk attitude continues through the next two numbers, “Feed ‘Em to the Lions” by Fall of Christianity and “Later Than You Think” by Hot Spit Dancers.
Noah Georgeson, one of the composers of the film, has several songs attributed to him in this score. They include tracks seven, ten, fifteen and nineteen. His songs lean more toward instrumental lo-fi, while, like Dahl’s songs, incorporating some recitation. One of his songs, “Appropriation Mix”, is the last song on the album. This song uses bright instrumentals to finish off the album.
Notably, tracks 11, 12 and 13 are all live recordings of Pavement. Taken May 19, 1992, these three songs from the band include the typical denotes of live recordings: claps and cheering from the audience and short bits of chatter from the band members.
The medley of artists on this album make it one that spans several genres, while keeping both a thread of lo-fi and punk music throughout.
