This week Questlove announced the 7th Annual Roots Picnic. Happening again at Festival Pier, this year’s picnic will here just in time for the start of summer, May 31st of Memorial Day weekend. Shawn Gee, producer of the Roots Picnic said, “We are excited about the lineup we are able to put together this year. The Picnic is one of the highlights of the year for us and its a great way to start off the summer.” The lineup for this year’s Picnic is quite possibly the best one yet. With a diverse group of artists ranging from Snoop Dogg to The War on Drugs, there is definitely something for everyone. Gee says, “Our idea was always to present an eclectic mix of talent that reflects the diversity that exists in fans music preferences.”
Other big names at this year’s fest include Janelle Monáe and Action Bronson. You can also catch up-and-comer Jhené Aiko and local Philly favorite Chill Moody. The Roots themselves will be making at least two appearances at the upcoming Picnic. They will be performing their own set as well as a supporting set for Snoop Dogg. Questlove announced the lineup via a cue-card video you can check out here.
The Roots Picnic is just another addition to an already busy year for The Roots. The have just begun their new residency on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. They are also at work on their 11th studio album, And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. Black Thought has stated that the album is almost finished. “It coming soon,” he said. “Hopefully sometime this spring.” The album is a concept album in the same vein as their critically acclaimed undun.
Tickets for the Roots Picnic go on sale Friday, March 7th at noon.
