Rapper 50 Cent will be headlining a show at SXSW this year. The performance will be live-streamed by mobile app Hang w/.
According to Billboard, the app is used by a number of celebrities to broadcast their activities and chat with fans on a daily basis. 50 Cent, who was born Curtis James Jackson III, is also an investor in Hang With, Inc., the company that created the app. It was launched in March 2013 and has since been downloaded over a million times.
The SXSW performance will take place on Tuesday, March 11, at 8 p.m. in the 1100 Warehouse. That day is known as “crossover” night because it is the final night of technology-focused SXSW Interactive and the first night of SXSW Music.
In a statement, the Grammy award-winning rapper said, “I’m excited to be able to bring my fans behind the scenes and give the opportunity to those who couldn’t make it a chance to experience a concert at South By Southwest.”
50 Cent recently announced that his forthcoming album, Animal Ambition, will be released on June 3, with pre-sale beginning on March 18, just a week after his SXSW performance.
The Hang w/ app has broadcast over 3 million live events so far, with some initiated by stars like Lucy Hale, Kaskade, Cheech and Chong and Soulja Boy. 50 Cent has been using the app on a somewhat regular basis, like when he records a few minutes of a New York Knicks game he attends. Fans who choose to follow a celebrity are notified by the app any time that person begins a new live broadcast.
