Former Distillers and Spinnerette frontwoman Brody Dalle continues her solo work with the release of a part-anime, part punk rock video that also happens to include backup vocals from Shirley Manson. It’s the first solo release for Dalle in more than four years, as well as her debut solo vid.
Produced by Dalle herself, along with animator Anthony Winn and video director Richard Farmer, “Meet the Foetus/Oh The Joy” gives us the first glimpse into Dalle’s upcoming solo album, which she’s been working on since late 2012.
The video starts as a straight anime and a commentary on childbirth, according to Dalle, who’s had two kids of her own since the breakup of The Distillers. The title “foetus” wears a top hat as he flies a dragon through the dark, ominous streets of Japan, interacting with scenes of skulls, UFOs and rioting crowds along the way. Then the vid shifts along with the tone of the music, and suddenly Dalle and Garbage lead vocalist Shirley Manson are giving a hazy-hued, energetic stage performance on a leopard print carpet. Described as a mash-up of Cowboy Bebop and a more serious commentary on world events, the video takes two worlds and combines them, just as the song is a kind of two-part piece with an obvious style shift.
Dalle’s first solo album, titled Diploid Love, is slated for release on April 28.
