A musical story, still unfolding.
Possible Thieves is not a traditional album. It could be described as fitting more of the pattern or description of a movie or television score. This album was created by a trio of artists, Travis Just, Chlöe Roe and Jack Lynch. The group is said to have specifically formed to accompany Object Collection’s collaboration with playwright Richard Foreman as the first steps of a project to be released later this year (via https://objectcollection.us/current-2/.)
The album seems as if it is narrating something else, speaking to a story outside of itself, serving as a sensory guide through an experience or tale. Its eerie nature, especially in the first half of the album, gives the image that it could accompany a sci-fi epic and as unexpected and extraterrestrial twists and turns take place, the music follows with its unpredictability.
Later in the album, in “Knock, Knock, Knock” and “Magic Objects,” the deep bass, rattling and droning undertones come to a halt and are transformed into a lighter, higher-pitched tone. Many parts of these two tracks seem to glitter and ring in a different way than the rest of the album, painting an image of stars and space.
As powerful and cinematic as the album is, the closing track, “Ash,” ends on a rather unresolved note instead of in a dramatic or loud and booming way as one might assume for a collection like this. It is rather cryptic, ending in a way that makes you feel as if the story is not quite over, as if there might be something else that is still unknown.
This lack of closure doesn’t feel accidental; instead, it reinforces the sense that Possible Thieves is just one part of a larger narrative still unfolding. As the larger project develops, it will be intriguing to see how Possible Thieves fits into the full picture and what new dimensions it might reveal.
