Motionblur brings a fair-minded musical style to Split Chain’s discography.
Split Chain is an English nu metal band that was formed in Bristol back in 2023. The lineup consists of vocalist Bert Martínez-Cowles, bassist Tom Davies, drummer Aaron Black and guitarists Oli Bowles and Jake Reid. On July 11, the band released their album, Motionblur, which is simply fantastic. Each track has in-your-face musical mayhem.
Kicking things off is “Under The Wire,” and what is rather surprising is how, at the very start, very little noise can be heard before the crashing sound of the guitar, keyboard and drums smacks the background with great authority, while Cowls dazzles the mind with his harmonic voice. The whole production gives “Under The Wire” a solid start on Motionblur.
“I’m Not Dying To Be Here” is a rather gloomy, yet insightful ditty. Thanks to the keyboard playing, creating notes that contribute to the high emotions that Cowles is expressing. Altogether, the feeling of sadness and hopelessness can be felt through the dynamic and relatable lyrics that talk about not wanting to be in a place that is filled with endless darkness and negativity.
Another sizzling ditty is “Grey In The Blue.” What is really enjoyable about this number is how Split Chain mixes the elements of hard rock and metal to create a vein-jolting sound that could cause some listeners to relate to what the lyrics are saying. Right at the start, Black’s drum beats welcome listeners with hard-hitting beats before the guitarists serenade the atmosphere with blazing metal riffs. “Grey In The Blue” is a great number with an impactful mix of hard rock and metal.
“Headway” is another vein-jolting composition, and what shines brightly is the guitar smacking the atmosphere with earth-shattering riffs. Right off the bat, the sound of classic rock guitar riffs welcomes listeners to Split Chan’s chaotic world before the rest of the bombastic instrumentation and vocal performance serenades the ears with a heavy, melodic and rockin’ vibe that can cause some people to head-bang while the tune leaves their speakers.
Overall, Motionblur is a bit different from other nu metal albums due to how the whole thing heavily bleeds harmony, melody, hard rock and metal, but all of those elements are fantastic because it shows how Split Chain wants to create music that resembles who they are as a band. Also, the music proves how much the band cares about creating smashing music.
