Atmospheric Aggression
Relief in Sleep is a relatively new, up and coming band that demands attention. Unlike most new bands, Relief in Sleep make a genuine attempt at sounding extraordinarily different. From start to finish, the band blends several kinds of elements from various sources, and the end result ends up being a fresh sound. As a result, their work is differentiated from the mass amount of music being put out today. Specifically, they take influences from metal, ambient and hard rock. Relief in Sleep signed with Imminence Records in December and subsequently re-issued their their debut album Godspeed.
Godspeed is arguably one of the best albums to come out in recent years. Perhaps the most stand out aspect of the entire record is the frontwoman’s female vocals that dominate throughout the release. They sound powerful, passionate and epic. Unlike most female vocalists in metal, singer Kara Dennis utilizes a style that is both beautiful and harmonious. Though they aren’t shouted or screamed, and they fit superbly with the music.
In the instrumentals department, there’s nothing to complain about. The riffs are not only catchy and memorable, but they are also creatively composed and well thought-out. The song structures are progressive and take the listener on a journey between airy atmospheric guitars and placid ambiance. Even the drums stand out, as they make use of non-traditional drum patterns and fills. Tracks such as “Tides” and the title track “Godspeed” are prominent examples of how great and colossal this album sounds.
That is not to say that the album is without faults, however. At times, generic hardcore backup vocals are present in some parts of the album. Their brief presence is reminiscent of various other bands and gives off a feeling of predictability and boredom. Thankfully they aren’t prominent or overwhelmingly bothersome. Though not a perfect album, the negative aspects are minimal.
In summary, Relief in Sleep is a band that is worth a music lover’s time. With so many different influences they are likely to attract listeners of all kinds, and with such superb songwriting they aren’t likely to disappoint. With that said, Godspeed comes highly recommended for those interested in hearing something fresh and new.
