For the upcoming Record Store Day aka Black Friday, The Flaming Lips will release an album of Stone Roses covers along with a special chocolatey treat.
2013 marks The Lips’ 30th year as a band, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down yet. They’re actually giving music fans something to look forward to on the consumer hellfest otherwise known as Black Friday (which also happens to be Record Store Day). They will release a cover album of the Stone Roses’ 1989 self-titled debut, another addition to a growing list of cover projects that includes King Crimson’s In the Court of the Crimson King, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, and Deep Purple. It features a number of special guests including Polica, Peaking Lights, and New Fumes. Along with the cover LP, The Lips will release a vinyl edition of their recent Peace Swords EP and their collaborative EP with Tame Impala in which the two bands cover each other’s songs.
But that’s not all! There are toys! A toy frog, to be exact, named “Fuck You Frog,” with recording capabilities and a 7″ copy of their previously unreleased first demo. Also in the works is a life-sized chocolate skull with a hard candy brain flavored like…well…brain fluid. Inside the brain is a magic coin that will apparently get its owner into any Flaming Lips show anywhere in the world. The Lips are no strangers to odd marketing techniques. Past merchandise has included an anatomical chocolate heart with USB playlist, a human skull container for a new song, a marijuana flavored gummy skull with a USB of new material, and the blood of musical collaborators.
The Stone Roses cover LP, Peace Swords vinyl, Tame Impala collaboration, and Fuck You Frog are out November 29th, while the chocolate skull might be. If not on Black Friday, fans can get their hands on the skull come Christmas.
