American rapper, singer-songwriter, and producer, Kevin Abstract, has announced a tour in support of his new solo album, Blanket. The tour includes a stop in San Francisco at Cafe du Nord on December 15.
Abstract is most well known for being the leader and founder of hip-hop boyband, BROCKHAMPTON, who disbanded after 12 years following the release of their eighth studio album, TM, last year. Abstract formed the band in 2010 by putting out an ad on the Kanye West fan forum, KanyeToThe, which received response from over 30 users. The band saw a number of lineup changes before settling on a core 13 members who, led by Abstract, released a total of eight albums in just five years.
During BROCKHAMPTON’s meteoric rise to fame, Abstract found time to build a successful solo career. He released his debut album, MTV1987, in 2014 which put both him and BROCKHAMPTON on the radar of excited music listeners. His sophomore LP, American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story, was released in 2016 and included the hit single, “Empty.”
Following the release of BROCKHAMPTON’s career defining Saturation Triology of albums and their follow-up, iridescence, Abstract began to tease a brand new solo project. This culminated in 2019’s, ARIZONA BABY, an album that featured contributions from a number of BROCKHAMPTON members and collaborators.
Abstract surprised the world when BROCKHAMPTON released their seventh studio album, The Family, in 2022, which was a Kevin Abstract solo album in disguise.
Abstract’s most recent project, Blanket, is a major departure from the sound fans have come to associate with him. It features songs rooted in punk and indie-rock, making it a bold first taste of what is to come for Kevin Abstract post BROCKHAMPTON.
