The Australian musician, Tash Sultana, is playing at The Frost Amphitheater in Stanford on August 25th, 2023.
Sultana got her music career kicked up a level after getting recognition via busking in Melbourne and putting up her live-jamming onto Youtube. With her incredible musical talent and unique sound, in addition to the way she plays live — recording and looping herself playing to create layers of guitar and drums, she built up a fan base.
The shot to fame narrative though conceals the amount of work and experience that went into the musician Sultana was and is. When she was only 13, she was already performing at open mic nights six times a week in Victoria. She headed the band Mindpilot for a number of years (from 2008 to 2012), before the band broke up.
Once YouTube fame came, and her solo career started going up, Sultana was quickly awarded Triple J’s “J Award”, given to the Unearthed Artist of the Year. She put out an EP, Notion, soon afterwards, and went on to do a world tour. Her first album, Flow State, came out on August 31st, 2018 on Lonely Lands Records. This was followed by a second album, Terra Firma, in 2021.
But Sultana doesn’t define herself by her musical accolades and critical acclaim. When asked by Cyclone Wehner of themusic.com.au what her proudest achievement is, Sultana said, “Honestly? Achieving the headspace that I’m in is my proudest achievement — ‘cause I think you can paint your life a million different colours but, if your perspective is bleak from within, then you’re never gonna be where you wanna be. I just think I’ve embraced a little bit of a different style of thinking and being. In that, I’ve just stopped giving a f*** about everything — maybe a little bit too much — and I’ve let go. And everything that I want is kind of happening.”
Don’t get the idea though that this means she doesn’t care about the music; this couldn’t be further from the truth. About making and playing music, Sultana said, “It’s the best fun that I have. I play music every single day. There’s never really a day where I’m not, like, jamming, playing something, singing or whatever. Like I said, it’s like air. It’s just what you do to stay alive.”
This show at Frost Amphitheater will be coming off the release of her new EP, Sugar, set to come out on August 11th, 2023.
