UK’s Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (aka TEED, real name Orlando Higginbottom) will be playing back to back with Skream, Sammy Virji, and INVT at 1015 Folsom on July 21st.
Growing up in Oxford, the son of New College choir conductor Edward Higginbottom, Orlando was seeped in music early on (he was a part of his dad’s choir for multiple years), eventually attending the Junior Royal Academy of Music and music colleges in Bristol and Leeds (both of which he dropped out from). Inspired by the jungle music scene in the UK, Higginbottom started programming his own music with Cubase at the age of 13. In his early-to-mid twenties, after a few EP releases and years of touring successfully as a DJ, Higginbottom put out his first Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs album, Trouble, with Polydor Records in 2012. The album found critical acclaim, getting named the “album of the year” by DJ Magazine and the “Debut Electronic album of the year” by iTunes UK.
A series of tours, a move to Los Angeles, production and songwriting for other artists, a couple self-released EPs on his own label, Nice Age, and ten years of existence took place between his debut and his follow-up album, When the Lights Go Out (released on Nice Age). His new album leans more toward the songwriterly, while utilizing the electronic artist’s arsenal of instruments, as compared with his debut album which felt more dance-focused.
As he explained in a conversation with Lina Abascal of Rolling Stone, When the Lights Go Out was formed in part from 100+ tracks he had made in the interim years in Los Angeles. He put the tracks into three categories: hopeful, feverish and anxious, and “straight up sad shit”. All the tracks on the album ended up coming out of the sad category. He calls the album “a sad pop record”. While the songs may be about heartbreak, they remain danceable and sound beauty amidst the sadness. With roughly twenty years of DJ experience, brilliant music taste (for example, playing “Verso Nord” by Daniel Bacalov early in his Lot Radio set last year), and kind demeanor, July 21st at 1015 Folsom should be a fun and musically engaging night.
