The iconic alternative rock band, Pixies, are hitting the Moody Amphitheater stage on June 25th! It includes opening acts, Franz Ferdinand and Bully, who are guaranteed to open the night with incredible music as well. Pixies are an award studded band and Austin is lucky to be a part of their new tour stops!
The Pixies formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986, almost 40 years ago. They played a huge role in the 1990s alternative rock boom and paved the way for many alternative rock bands today. Their music draws from elements of punk rock and surf rock, in which they popularized within the mainstream media. Although the lineup has changed throughout the years, the current band lineup consists of Black Francis on lead vocals and guitar, David Lovering on drums, percussion and backing vocals, Joey Santiago on lead guitar and backing vocals and Paz Lenchantin on bass, violin and backing vocals. Francis is the primary songwriter for the band and his lyrics He writes about a lot of controversial topics, including biblical violence, crime, and other worldly creatures.
Joey Santiago and Black Francis met when living next to each other in college at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Santiago noticed Francis playing music and they started to play together. They began working together on creating their own music in 1984 with Francis composing on his guitar and writing lyrics everywhere he went. The band’s album, Surfer Rosa, came out 4 years after they met on March 21st, 1988. The album went certified gold and put the Pixies on the map almost immediately. Their next album, Doolittle, went certified platinum and sold over 1 million copies! They released two more albums, Bossanova and Trompe le Monde, before disbanding in 1993.
After 11 years, there was finally talk of a Pixie reunion in 2004. In 2003, the band started talking again and they started rehearsing together again in private, which led to a reunion. In February they announced a full reunion tour and tickets sold out within minutes! Fans clearly missed the band’s unique style and lyricism. Their music has always been known for its “loud-quiet-loud” music structure and many bands have followed suit with their style.. The contrasting volume dynamics has always been their signature and people travel far and wide to hear it. Since the reunion, the band has released 4 studio albums titled Indie Cindy, Head Carrier, Beneath the Eyrie and most recently, Doggerel.
Doggerel came out just last year on September 30th, 2022. This upcoming tour will be filled with new Doggerel content and first ever live performances of songs from the album. The Pixies are credited with popularizing the extreme dynamics and stop-start timing that is popular within the alternative rock scene. They also have a 90-minute documentary titled loudQUIETloud: a film about the Pixies that was released in 2006. It is all about their 2004 reunion and reunion tour and the years after the breakup. It is a great watch if you want to learn more about the band! Don’t miss your opportunity to see a band that paved the way in the alternative rock industry!
