It’s been a solid five years since we heard anything new from the supergroup we know as Tomahawk. Now, the band has released a new song that rips in the fashion of their 2003 album Mit Gas called “Stone Letter.” The last we heard the band, they existed as a three-piece following the departure of original bassist Kevin Rutmanis. In that configuration they released the American Indian-influenced Anonymous, comprised entirely of songs derived from ancient native songbooks. Now, singer Mike Patton, guitarist Duane Denison, drummer John Stanier are joined by current Melvins/Fantomas bassist Trevor Dunn. The new single features Patton’s trademark cooing through the song’s verses and then an explosion of shouting alongside Denison’s twang-y distortion on the song’s chorus. Check out the whole song over at SPIN.
UPDATE: You can now stream the whole song right here.
If that wasn’t enough Tomahawk news for you, the band also has a special Record Store Day Black Friday 7″ coming out for another new single, “Waratorium.” Their new album Oddfellows is slated for January 29th, 2013 release on Ipecac Recordings. And lastly–and in the most excting part–the band is hitting the road just after Trevor Dunn wraps up his 51/51 tour with The Melvins. The band will be playing Austin’s stellar Fun Fun Fun Fest as well dates overseas at Lollapalooza Chile/Brasil and Soundwave Festival Australia. These will be the band’s first tour dates since their last tour for Mit Gas in 2004.
