Canadian American singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette has been known as one of alternative rock’s foremost female vocalists of the 1990s. Her album Jagged Little Pill has sold more than 33 million copies, which tracks like Ironic, You Oughta Know, and Hand in My Pocket, which are insanely well-written pop-rock songs I’m sure you’ve heard on the radio before. This album has won Morrisette 4 Grammys including Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, and Best Female Rock Vocalist. While she never managed to replicate the success of Jagged Little Pill, Morissette continued to release well-received albums including an album released last year called Such Pretty Forks in the Road. Morrissette has received an extensive list of awards for her music
Garbage, with a lineup unchanged since its formation in 1993, is an alternative quarter consisting of Scottish singer and musician Shirley Manson on vocals, American musicians Duke Erikson on guitar, bass, and keyboards, Steve Marker on guitar and keyboards, and Butch Vig on drums and production. Their electronic-washed sound that added to the landscape of My Bloody Valentine, Curve, and Sonic Youth infused with their driven pop sound gained them international fandom breaking through from their cult underground following. Garbage has been nominated for more than 6 Grammy’s, winning them as Breakthrough Band for MTV Europe Music Awards, 2 BMI Best Pop Awards for their songs Stupid Girl, and Specia, and many more.
Liz Phair, yet another award-winning artist on this roster, is an American singer-songwriter who never managed to make it into the mainstream but created a groundbreaking sound that infused lo-fi indie rock production techniques with the classic structure of a singer-songwriter. Phair’s debut gold-selling album, Exile in Guyville, which was released in 1993 and won her Spin’s Readers’ Poll Award Album of the Year the same year, set off an influence to thousands of female singer-songwriters of the 90s and gained her an international female rock artist status. Phair wasn’t able to manage an album that reached the sales and attention her debut album received until her return in 2003 with a self-titled album with her most famous song Why Can’t I, a classic pop-rock song that can be seen in countless movie soundtracks and an early 2000s staple piece.
