IDLES formed in Bristol in 2009 consisting of welsh singer Joe Talbot on vocals, along with English musicians Mark Bowen on guitar, Lee Kiernan on guitar, Adam Devonshire on bass, and Jon Beavis on drums. Talbot and Devonshire met in sixth form college in Exeter where they decided to move to Bristol and start a rock band. Talbot states “It took us a long time to get productive because we didn’t know what the fuck we were doing at all, we were fucking terrible for a long time.” After haven opened the Bat-Cave Night Club in Bristol they met Bowen while on the DJ circuit in the scene. Once the band was fully comprised of all the core members they began to release a few EP’s including their first release Welcome EP in 2012 followed by Meat, and Meta.
The band released their first album in 2017 called Brutalism with a picture of Talbot’s mother featured on the cover, who died while working on the album. Brutalism received 4 stars from DIY magazine calling it, “an exhilarating escape along frenzied rhythm’s and powerhouse rhythms with a ferocious commentary for guidance… as vital as it is volatile.” The Line of Best Fit gave It 9/10 calling IDLES “one of the most exciting bands right now.” Joy as an Act of Resistance, their second album released in 2018 which then nominated them for Best Breakthrough Act at the 2019 Brit Awards and later won the 2019 Kerrang! Award for Best British Breakthrough Act. The album also was shortlisted for the 2019 Hyundai Mercury Prize.
Their most recent release, and the focus of this tour, is the album Ultra Mono released in June 2020 mid pandemic. This record has guest appearances from Jehnny Beth, Warren Ellis, David Yow, and Jamie Cullum; Louder Than War awarding it a 10 out of 10 and describing it as “the album of their career.”
