A Perfect Match
It has not been too long of a wait for Black Mountain’s fans. Less than two years ago Jagjaguwar released the band’s last album Wilderness Heart and it is now ready to publish the Canadians’ new project: Year Zero- The Original Soundtrack.
This time the band worked on the tunes that accompanied the surf movie 0000 (Year Zero), produced by Globe. The surf brand proudly announced that Black Mountain created “a sonic landscape that fully delivers the immersive experience the director envisioned for the film.”
What might be disappointing is that the album only features five new tracks and combines them with songs from the band’s older works. While the process of selecting previous tracks to incorporate into the soundtrack was probably challenging for the band, the Canadians did a great job.
Black Mountain’s psychedelic style is a perfect combination with the film’s footage shot with super 16mm film. Within the new songs, “Mary Lou” marks the return of the band and its hallucinatory sounds. Voices are used just as instruments, and the repetitive bass line hypnotically swings back and forth as if transported by ocean waves.
