In celebration of the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Jay Farrar of Son Volt, Will Johnson of Centro-matic, Anders Parker of Varnaline are releasing a tribute album. New Multitudes will be release February 28 via Rounder Records. Standard purchases will receive a 12-track LP, while limited edition purchases include 12 additional compositions recorded by Farrar and Parker, along with original Guthrie lyric sheets.
All of the lyrics used on New Multitudes are written by Guthrie. Interestingly, these songs were never developed by Guthrie himself. Per Nora Guthrie’s request, Yames, Farrar, Johnson, and Park created their own interpretations of 12 Guthrie compositions for the album. Nora Guthrie hopes that this release will showcase aspects of Guthrie’s life that have not yet been told. Nora said,” Lyric wise, it’s a part of the story that is still mostly unknown. From Woody’s experiences on LA’s skid row to his later years in Topanga Canyon, they are uniquely intimate, and relate two distinctly emotional periods in his life.”
Yames, Farrar, Johnson, and Park will head out on a tour in March in support of the album. Included below is a track off the album, the track listing, and their March dates.
