LA’s own indie rock outfit The Airborne Toxic Event had scheduled a tour to begin this fall, but has been rescheduled to begin in 2021 due to Covid-19. The original Greek Theatre performance was scheduled for October 9, 2020 and has been moved to April 2, 2021. The expansive tree-lined outdoor theater is the perfect venue for The Airborne Toxic Event’s dreamy, triumphant sound.
Formed in 2006, The Airborne Toxic Event consists of Mikel Jollett (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steven Chen (guitar, keyboards), Adrian Rodriguez (electric bass, backing vocals), and Daren Taylor (drums). They’re most known for blending their rock sound with orchestral arrangements, and have performed with the Calder Quartet, a string quartet based in Los Angeles, as well as the Louisville Orchestra and Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
Their debut self-titled album featured the stunning hit song “Sometime Around Midnight” was name the No. 1 Alternative Song of the Year on iTunes’ Best of 2008 list. Following that, their second album All At Once was produced by Dave Sardy, who also produced albums by Oasis, Band of Horses, LCD Soundsystem, Wolfmother, and Autolux. Their sixth studio album Hollywood Park is deeply personal to Jollett, as the concept centers around Inglewood’s Hollywood Park racetrack that was demolished in 2015. The album delves into Jollett’s pain in losing both his father and this beloved racetrack within months of each other. The album was released in May 2020 and bears a resemblance to early Arcade Fire and The National with plenty of somber ballads. Songs like “Come on Out” have a nostalgic ’80s sound that’ll get you swaying around. Catch them live at the Greek Theatre next year!
