Wasalu Mohammed Jaco, better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is an American rapper, producer, entrepreneur, and activist. Having been inspired by his West African roots and his father’s membership in the Black Panther Party, Lupe Fiasco was raised in a Muslim household in Chicago. His father was a very important influence in his life, teaching him an array of skills and intellectual concepts that have had a large effect on him. Although Lupe Fiasco originally disliked the vulgarity of hip-hop and instead preferred jazz, he eventually came to have an interest in the musical genre after listening to Nas’ It Was Written. Lupe Fiasco rose to fame after the release of his 2006 album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor, receiving three Grammy nominations. Since then, he has released multiple albums, two clothing lines, a collaboration with Reebok, and more.
And on June 20th, Lupe Fiasco will come to the Bay Area to perform his albums worth of hits. His most recent release has been Drogas Wave, which was released on September 21, 2018. This album is the second part of a planned trilogy. Lupe Fiasco has been known to incorporate elements of activism, philosophy, and more in his music, taking his own spin on the stereotypical aspects of hip-hop. His appearance at Bay Area’s The Warfield is surely not one to be missed. Be sure to catch him there on June 20th and continue to follow MXDWN for all your music updates.
