Irish rock band, The Boomtown Rats, return after nearly 4-decades, to record an album, which is due to release in March of 2020. The new album, Citizens of Boomtown, is set to feature 10 brand-new songs, with the first single, “Trash Glam, Baby,” releasing on Jan. 10.
“Indeed, if anything, it was time to hear that noise again,” said vocalist, Bob Geldof. “ But I only knew that when I heard this group of individuals re-constitute their specific racket.”
In addition to the brand-new album, The Boomtown Rats are featured in a documentary based on their journey as a band, directed by filmmaker, Billy McGrath. The film will showcase a mix of interviews and unseen personal archives from their roles in the punk wars, the hits, the drama and Live Aid.
Geldof is also releasing a book, Tales of Boomtown Glory, published by Faber Music. The book will contain a complete collection of Geldof’s lyrics from Boomtown Rats, seven solo albums, and will be come with 28 songs written by Geldof, with exclusive scans from his notebooks over the years. The book with give insight into the inspiration behind the lyrics and the context of the songs.
According to The Boomtown Rats press release, Geldof mentioned the reasoning behind the reunion was because, that is what bands do. He mentions band are to make records, and songwriters are to write songs.
“There’s so much to respond to in this new and different febrile atmosphere,” Geldof said. “People forget we took our name from Woody Guthrie, the great musical activist. I think The Boomtown Rats have always shows that rock’n’roll is a form of musical activism.”
The Boomtown Rats are set to embark on their UK tour, shortly after the release of their album. Their first stop is at The Dome, in Brighton.
