Their name might be a mouthful but Approachable Members of Your Local Community are especially adept at crafting concise alternative pop nuggets that worm their way into your brain and don’t let go. They were just announced as a showcasing artist at SXSW 2020 and are releasing single after single on a march towards their new EP that’s due out next year. Today, we’re continuing the march with a premiere of their new song “Citrus Fruit.”
The song opens with a simple arpeggio guitar line and sung-spoke vocals, slowly adding percussion and winding its way into an explosively catchy chorus. On “Citrus Fruit,” Approachable Members of Your Local Community are able to perfectly mix contemporary pop conventions with more alternative approaches to songwriting and instrumentation. Culling influence from the ’80s to the ’10s, the result is a mix that perfectly explains the Melbourne, Australian band’s quick rise in popularity.
If their tongue-in-cheek press photos and matching Adidas track suits didn’t give it away, Approachable Members of Your Local Community is music for the best of times. They add a touch of rah-rah positivity to their pop-oriented sound and as they describe on their site, are “funny but not a joke.”
“We’ve been living with our feet across two worlds – the sweet, and the real,” said band member Michael Fisher. “The past couple years have been anything but plain. Inside and beyond the band, we’re in this sweet spot – we’ve been pushing ourselves and challenging each other to be better, all while playing dreamy shows, and becoming stronger friends as this incredible project slowly fills up our lives. Some parts of our lives can be moving quickly, but it sometimes feels as if everything else is frozen in time. We’ve totally thrown ourselves into our work, our degrees and the band – and then there are these times when we look up, and look back at every other moment we’ve missed, and whether we deserve it. ‘Citrus Fruit’ is about punching through the feeling of living in someone else’s skin.”
