The all-female led rock band The Coathangers have shared a new video for “Hey Buddy,”from their recent album release The Devil You Know, via Suicide Squeeze Records back in March. This mlatest video comes ahead of their recently announced tour with Control Top that will launch in Memphis, Tennessee, along with their special pair of New Year’s Day shows which will take place in Atlanta.
The new music video was filmed in Long Beach, California and features the local skate crew Puff Tuff Babes, led by local DJ and scene supporter Jeannette McDiarmid aka DJ Polyester. The video shows the band playing in a venue in the city, as the skaters ride by on a summer day, while the chorus states “It’s just the devil / the devil you know,” in reference to the recent album.
“‘Hey Buddy’ deals with oppression and judgement, and the self awareness needed to question one’s own fears and prejudices. Since the song touches on all sorts of street harassment, it felt right to feature bad-ass ladies on wheels that use their passion for skating to shake up the power dynamics of street interaction,” the band explained in a press release.
This visual is a bit more upbeat than some of the more political songs that the band has released including “F The NRA.” The Coathangers explained that this choice was done to show people connecting over art, or activities such as skating, to help deal with the sociopolitical issues going on.
“There is a confidence and grit that comes with any kind of street skating, and it felt like the perfect union of words in action. It’s about being free and using your art- be it music or skating or whatever- to express your frustrations, ideas, and desires,” the band exlaborated in a press release. “Having a crew and supporting each other is the only way we can deal with the socio-political issues we are all facing right now. We’re all in this together so let’s support one another!”
