Looks like Freddie Gibbs is Team Jay-Z. After Mr. Carter was recently under fire for signing a deal with the NFL, a deal where he tells them that he does not need them because he “[plays] stadiums too,” Gibbs is in full support of it. According to Stereogum, he showed his support in an Instagram story, saying, “I’m riding with Jay-Z, straight up, man. Fuck Colin Kaepernick. All y’all niggas marched for Colin Kaepernick and he took a settlement and ain’t tell y’all what he got or nothing. He settled. So there it go. Y’all hating on Jay-Z for trying to own something in the NFL. Y’all niggas is some motherfucking crabs.”
The NFL signed on Jay-Z and his label Roc Nation, as the “live music entertainment strategist.” Within the deal, he and the label will consult on the Super Bowl halftime show and the NFL’s other live music events. It has also been reported that the billionaire will become the owner of an NFL franchise, sparking more controversy. While the rapper has supported Kaepernick since he began kneeling during the national anthem at 49ers games in protest of racial injustice and police brutality in 2016, celebrities and fans alike have had mixed feelings about the new venture.
Kaepernick’s girlfriend Nessa Diab recently went on New York radio station Hot 97 speaking out against the deal. She stated, “The disappointment in Jay-Z isn’t in the partnership. The disappointment is wrapping it in social justice. [Kaepernick] didn’t just take a knee; he put the work behind it. And he lost his career for it.” Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid continues to kneel and says the potential of Jay-Z being an owner of an NFL franchise is “despicable.”
