Simone White may not be a household name yet but chances are you’ve heard at least one of her songs. Her song “The Beep Beep Song” soundtracked an ad campaign by car manufacturer Audi, giving the singer-songwriter a sudden rush of unexpected popularity.
Today, we’re pleased to premiere the latest single from the folksy musician called “Don’t Turn Your Back On Love.” White describes her songwriting as being like a puzzle and the dynamics of this new song are proof of this approach. She blends the soothing, angelic vocals of folk music with a pulsating, danceable beat that wouldn’t be out of place in a nightclub.
“‘Don’t Turn Your Back On Love is a dance version of an acoustic folk song that was originally on my album Silver Silver under the title ‘Never Be That Tough,’ said White. “Both versions were produced and co-written by Adam Goldman (aka Samuel Bing of the electro-pop band Fol Chen). I wanted to make an ebullient dance song, a disco song, but that style wasn’t suited to the album we were making at the time. We even took the title ‘Never Be That Tough’ from a different line in the song, because ‘Don’t Turn Your Back on Love’ just sounded too commercial. The disco version sat around as a demo until I recorded the vocals properly and Adam added the finishing touches to the mix.”
Like a master puzzler, White can find usefulness in every piece of music. In fact, she created “Don’t Turn Your Back On Love” from the scrap heap of a rejected commercial jingle by her producer.
“One day in the studio I played for Simone a recently rejected fast-food chain commercial demo I’d made, so we could have some fun ridiculing it,” said Bing. “I see it as a testament to her sensitivity and empathy as an interpreter and songwriter that somehow she heard something in it that she connected with and that later became ‘Don’t Turn Your Back On Love.'”
