Earlier this week when Desert Daze announced its complete 2019 lineup, one of the biggest pieces of news was that DEVO would be performing at the festival as a part of what was billed on the festival flyer as a “farewell tour.” The band also teased an announcement on Facebook, though ultimately the band only intended the announcement to be about the single festival appearance, which alone is big news as the band has only really played two “shows” (one appearance a three-song set) since 2016 and last toured in 2014.

According to an email sent to Rolling Stone by bassist Jerry Casale, the band also learned about the supposed “farewell tour” when the festival lineup was announced on Tuesday. The Desert Daze homepage still shows “Farewell Tour” under DEVO.

#1 If we were going to do a farewell tour we would not call it a farewell tour,” Casale emailed in a statement to Rolling Stone. “#2 If we were going to do a Beginning Was The End tour it would be Devo choosing when and where to make the announcement.” Rolling Stone says that they’ve reached out to Desert Daze officials for comment but haven’t heard back.

After DEVO’s most recent tour in 2014, the band played a 3-song guest appearance at charity event in Los Angeles in 2016 and in 2018 they played Burger Boogaloo 2018 in Oakland, CA. Because the band’s drummer Alan Meyers died in 2013, comedian and musician Fred Armisen filled in on drums during the 2018 festival appearance. There’s no indication at this time who will fill in on drums for the band’s Desert Daze set.
