John Paul Jones has announced a brand new musical project he will be working on, forming a new band called Sons Of Chipotle. The group is a duo composed of Jones and Anssi Karttunen, a Finnish cellist who is world renowned for his talents. The two have yet to unveil exactly what music they will be creating and performing together, but stated that Sons Of Chipotle will “cover an uncommonly vast area of the musical map” during its performances. With the long and varying careers of both these musicians, who knows what they will come up with.
Sons Of Chipotle have already announced two shows for later this year, both of which are in Japan. The two shows will take place on September 3rd and 5th at the Pitt Inn in Tokyo, a well known music venue in the city. The goal of the performances, as stated by the duo through social media, is to provide an intimate setting for fans to hear Jones and Karttunen play their music with complete freedom. The goal of the group, and of their live performances, is to allow the duo to experiment as much as they want in order to create something new.
The shows will feature more than just Sons of Chipotle, with two other acts already confirmed. One of the other performers is legendary musician Jim O’Rourke, known for his time as a member of Sonic Youth and for the extensive production work he has done with a variety of other artists. The other performer is Otomo Yoshihide, who is a well known Japanese composer and musician. Yoshihide has created countless works over his long career, spanning back to the 1980s. Both O’Rourke and Yoshihide currently reside in Japan, making the shows in Tokyo a great opportunity to work together with Sons of Chipotle.
This is not the first musical experiment by Jones this year, as he teamed up with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth just a few months ago. The duo performed in London to raise money for the independent radio station Resonance FM. The goal of the collaboration was to ensure that Resonance FM, which is broadcast on 104.4 FM in the UK, was able to stay independent and allow smaller artists to have a chance to get themselves heard on the radio. With all of these different ideas and projects going on John Paul Jones is showing no signs of slowing down his musical career.
