The new single, “Hate You” is a masterful collaboration with HEALTH and Jpegmafia. The sound is lyrically rough with an out pour of angst and frustration. The song’s synth background weaves lyrically with vocalist, Jpegmafia also known as Barrington Hendricks who brilliantly pulls you into the chaotic emotion. One of their fans said, “Yeahhhhhh I’m going to need a full collab album plz and thank you.”
“HATE YOU” is HEALTH’s fourth collaborative single since last September, following “Innocence” with Youth Code, “BODY/PRISON” with Perturbator, and the super stormy “MASS GRAVE” alongside Soccer Mommy’s Sophie Allison and Corin Roddick of Purity Ring.
Though the artists are an unexpected pairing, JPEGMAFIA and HEALTH have a mutual admiration for each other that began with JPEG’s discovery of HEALTH’s Max Payne 3 soundtrack and HEALTH’s finding of JPEG’s acclaimed 2018 album Veteran. HEALTH is an LA-based band of Jacob Duzsik, John Famiglietti, and Benjamin Miller.
HEALTH’s early success started back as an opener for Nine Inch Nails back in 2008. HEALTH first gained reputation through a remix of their song “Crimewave” by experimental electronic band Crystal Castles in August 2007. The band’s self-titled album was recorded in L.A.’s noise/experimental venue, The Smell which is known for its DIY mystique. Famiglietti said in an interview, “The room completely changes the tone of anything you want to record; makes a lot of things dark and beautiful. It also makes everything sound like “CLANG!”
HEALTH’s unique sound caught the attention of Spin in which they wrote, “The near-innocuous opening track of HEALTH’s self-titled album, Heaven segues into the 36-second neurotic dissonance of “Girl Attorney,” which picks up tempo on its transition into “Triceratops”—a thrashing scourge of screeches, feedback, and gratuitous clanging reminiscent of Liars laced with a relief of a Deerhunter meditation.”
HEALTH released a new album VOL. 4 :: SLAVES OF FEAR with EDM, noise, noise rock and industrial sounds. Tracks like “GOD BOTHERER,” “FEEL NOTHING” and “SLAVES OF FEAR” are pulse-pounding bangers. The band also released a clever webisode which serves as a music video for the track, “Strange Days (1999)” . This music video features the band’s drummer being caught and accused of going on a murderous rampage.
On JPEGMAFIA’s latest album, Veteran, Barrington Hendricks proclaims himself a veteran. With just two albums and a handful of EPs under his belt, this statement may seem a bit premature, but it is anything but that. JPEGMAFIA aka “Peggy” has served time in the Air Force and earned a Master’s degree in Journalism. At just 28 years old, he oozes confidence, knowledge, and creativity at an obscene rate. And the best part about this is that he is only getting better.
