The incredibly talented Jorja Smith has released a new music video for her song “The One.” Smith’s meteoric rise to fame over the past few years has gained her praise from fans and critics alike, which was cemented with the release of her debut album Lost & Found in August of this year. Bursting onto the scene in 2016 with her song “Blue Lights,” the young singer quickly found herself with a large and devoted fan base. Her fame and exposure continued to grow as many globally recognized artists began to take note of the Jorja and bring her in on their various projects.
The English singer was featured on Drake’s album More Life following the release of her first set of singles in 2016, an experience that exposed an incredibly large audience to her smooth and soulful vocals. Jorja Smith was placed among the ranks of some of the world’s largest musical acts who were also featured on More Life, proving that she could hold her own against some of the most talented performers out there. She has also collaborated with singer Kali Uchis and hip-hop icon Kendrick Lamar over the past two years. One of her greatest accomplishments so far is her recently revealed grammy nomination for best new artist in the 2019 awards. The Black Panther Soundtrack, which Jorja worked on with Kendrick Lamar, was also nominated for a number of categories at the award show.
Jorja Smith’s newly released video is just as mesmerizing as the song itself. The track is about being in a relationship with someone that you know is bad for you, but it being too painful to simply walk away from. The scenes in this video perfectly capture the emotions that come along with this and are relatable to anybody who has ever experienced heartbreak. Jorja shows herself as vulnerable and unable to walk away for much of the video, until the powerful moment at the end where she picks herself up and pulls herself away. Love and the pain it brings is a major theme in Jorja Smith’s music as a whole, and this powerful song is no exception. Smith herself does a fantastic job in the video, with her scenes and struggles throughout being the main focus of the music video. Throughout the song we see Jorja continually trying to leave the hotel she is at and the person she is with, but each time she turns back because leaving would break her. This changes by the end of the video, however, as Jorja is able to find the strength to walk away from what she knows is wrong for her, resulting in an empowering ending to the track and the video. Fans of Jorja Smith and even those who have never heard of her will love the video and be able to relate to its themes of self-empowerment and heartache.
