Liz Cooper & The Stampede’s single “Mountain Man” has been out for a while now, garnering the band attention from many major music outlets. Today we have the premiere of a video that features a fun take on the folksy tune with Cooper serenading shoppers at a local Nashville ALDI grocery store. Donning pink hair and an acoustic guitar, she walks through the aisles playing the song’s delicate finger-picked guitar figure, her voice starting out a little tentative but growing in confidence as she progresses through the number.
“Posture Dan, aka Daniel Yocum, and I decided to get strange and give the shoppers of Aldi a show,” said Cooper. “They don’t play music in their stores so it seemed like the perfect place to entertain. It was a spur of the moment idea done in one take forcing ourselves to make it through the whole song making lots of eye contact with uncomfortable shoppers and grocery store employees.”
Cooper keeps a straight face almost entirely throughout the single-take video, occasionally cracking a smile. At one point she asks the cameraman, “Is he down this aisle?” — though it’s unclear who exactly she is talking about (perhaps the store employee who eventually forces the musicians to pack up her guitar and leave the store). Though she clearly makes eye contact and is acknowledged by a few of the customers, many of the shoppers simply seem to ignore her playful stunt, shopping as if she was just the store’s Muzak.
Liz Cooper & The Stampede are gearing up for a run of dates with like-minded troubadour Phosphorescent after playing a short run with Houndmouth and Mt. Joy. The dates will be in support of the band’s 2018 album, Window Flowers, which was released in August.
