The New York City hip hop and soul duo OSHUN have announced a show at Brooklyn Bazaar this December. OSHUN, which consists of singers Niambi Sala and Thandiwe, who go by Niambi and Thandi, have been on a steady rise since releasing their first mixtape in 2015 titled, ASASE YAA, while still students at NYU. The duo describe themselves as “the sonic manifestation of Afrofuturism” and are social activists as well as musicians. Since their debut mixtape, they’ve released their first album, bittersweet vol. 1, which released in April. The duo have released several singles leading up to the release of the album, including their popular single “Sango” and their political activist song “Not My President.”
Niambi and Thandi met after having been accepted to the same scholarship program at NYU dedicated to community service and social change. They quickly discovered their similar values and love for creating and sharing music. Their name stems from a Yoruba deity, a goddess associated with water who appropriately relates to the synchronicity OSHUN have established between each other. “Our music, our writing, our relation to each other, how we relate to each other, and how we support each other—it was all grounded in us coming into ourselves as women,” Niambi said of their connection to each other. The DC natives challenge both themselves and societal questions in their music, turning the conversation into a larger narrative through their music and live shows.
