The self-described Japanese “kawaii metal” trio Babymetal has announced that they will be releasing their own graphic novel, due for this coming October. Titled “Apocrypha: The Legend of Baby Metal,” the comic will reportedly illustrate the group’s fictional mythology that has been accumulating since their debut in 2010, and even expand upon it.
“Discover the myth of the worldwide music sensation BABYMETAL,” reads the comic’s official synopsis, breaking down what fans have to expect. Tasked with defeating the forces of darkness and division, the metal spirits must travel through a variety of eras of time, assuming different forms and identities. What we are seeing is not the BABYMETAL of the present. It’s the original story based on BABYMETAL you’ve never heard before. The long-hidden spirit’s apocrypha of the METAL RESISTANCE will emerge.”
Fans will be able to first lay their eyes upon the release at New York Comic Con next month. Artist GMB Chomichuk will apparently be present at the Apocrypha panel on October 4, and the graphic novel’s publisher Z2 Comics will have a booth selling a couple limited-edition promotional posters with stunningly beautiful artwork.
Since their debut in 2010, the band has released two albums and is in the middle of a world tour themed around the idea of “the Chosen Seven,” the latest in a number of self-styled narratives that the band creates to supplement their music. Apparently the upcoming graphic novel will prominently feature the Chosen Seven, seven malevolent metal spirits.
Apocrypha releases at the end of October in two different editions: the basic edition for $24.99 and a limited, 500-copy Deluxe Edition which costs $199.99 and comes with a copy of the book signed by Chomichuk and three original prints.
