Ibeyi has released their new music video for their song “Transmission/Michaelion” off of their recently released album Ash. The album received much critical acclaim, with mxdwn naming it one of the “Top 50 Albums of 2017.” The new video is directed by Jamie-James Medina and Fons Schiedon and features Meshell Ndegeocello on bass. It also features a sample from the audiobook ‘Citizen: An American Lyric’ by Claudia Rankine plus an excerpt from The Diary of Frida Kahlo read by the twins mother Maya Dagnino. In the song, Lisa-Kaindé explains, “This song is the heat of our album. Transmitting is one of the reasons why we write songs.”
This is the third video released from the duo, following “Deathless,” and “I Wanna Be Like You.” It also serves as the fourth song released from the album, following “Away Away Away.” In a press release, the new video “…carries the viewer through the fabled story of the Tree of Ténéré.”
The pair most recently collaborated with Brazillian rapper Emicida for his single “Hacia El Amor” and were featured on PBS’ show Articulate.
The duo will also be heading out on tour very soon. They are set to kick off at the Theatre de Verdure Saint-Malo-Du-Bois in France July 11th. They will then support David Byrne later this year for Byrne’s “American Utopia” tour starting with two sold-out nights at The Fox Theatre in Oakland, CA August 16th and 17th. Most dates are already sold out. See the pair’s full schedule below.
