Punk supergroup Dead Cross have shared an acoustic cover of the Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” In a video posted from the band’s Instagram page, the band is seen performing the song at a local bar’s open mic night in Amsterdam. They are currently on tour supporting their self-titled EP, released on May 2nd as a surprise for fans. Earlier this year, the band teased the new music on social media leading up to the surprise release. It shortly follows their self-titled debut album released last year. It received much critical acclaim, given a “High Fidelity” ranking by mxdwn.
Along with the surprise album release, the band released the music videos to their songs “My Perfect Prisoner” directed by Eric Livingston and the fight-club themed “Church of the Motherfuckers,” which show the band’s views on religion. “I’d rather not fill in the blanks with outlandish oppressive morals, offensive social politics and patriarchal garbage. In the year 2017 A.D., some humans still think there is a god,” Pearson said about the video.
The band is composed of drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits) vocalist Mike Patton (Faith No More) guitarist Mike Crain (Retox, Festival of Dead Deer) and bassist Justin Pearson (The Locust, Retox) Pearson described the band’s style as “…bridge gaps between useless genres and definitions. Part also might be to just burn that shit down. It’s in our collective DNA. Either way, as long as people love it or hate it, we succeed.”
Bauhaus, the legendary goth rock band, released their final album over 10 years ago, with frontman Peter Murphy now working on solo projects. Murphy was recently forced to cancel his residency at The Chapel in San Francisco due to passport issues. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” was also covered by indie-pop band CHVRCHES in 2014, which was featured in the film Vampire Academy. The song was also featured on mxdwn’s list of “Best Alternative Halloween Songs” last year. Check out Dead Cross’ take on the classic song below.
UPDATE (7/12): Folks were clamoring for a full version of Dead Cross’s cover of Bauhaus after seeing the short clip. Those fans got what they want as the full version is now on Youtube. The performance is from their show on July 9 in Amsterdam.
