There are few personalities in music today quite like Matisyahu. With a full, and honest history behind the story-teller, he stands out among the rest. This December, Matisyahu recruits Common Kings, Orphan, and Papa G for an unforgettable performance at the Concord Music Hall.
Jewish-American reggae musician Matthew Miller was born in 1979 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Soon after, his family relocated to Berkeley, California, followed by White Plains, New York, where they eventually stayed. While his family ended their travels in White Plains, Miller’s travels were only beginning. Miller spent much of his upbringing traveling the country on camping trips, joining wilderness school, and attending Phish concerts – not your average adolescence. It was one of these camping trips where he eventually accepted Judaism, a religion that he once rebelled against earlier in his life. Visiting Israel shortly after, all the exploration he did around the nation and the world all attested to his love for reggae and hip-hop. Throughout the years Miller would perform at open-mike-nights and ultimately assembled a collection of musicians to be his backing band for his live performances. In 2004 after retitling himself Matisyahu, the backing band and Miller released their debut album Shake Off the Dust…Arise, and the rest is history.
Matisyahu’s music is unique to himself and who he is, and is incomparable to any other reggae musician’s music. It is courageous and vulnerable, as he raps and sings over reggae beats about Judaism, world peace, and much more. This can be heard on standout tracks “Sunshine”, “King Without a Crown”, or “Jerusalem”. After his 2007 album Youth was Grammy nominated for Best Reggae Album, his encouraging anthem of peace “One Day”, was certified gold. Matisyahu’s take on reggae-rap is unmatched, and is truly something special.
Matisyahu and his backing band bring a distinct energy to their live performances, genuinely creating a spiritual experience for the fans. This spectacle should not be missed, as Matisyahu embarks on his voyage across the nation to inspire his fans.
