If you’ve ever watched MSNBC, or keep up with politics, you’ve likely seen Joe Scarborough’s face. Tall, greying, suited with glasses, he wears the uniform of a network pundit – not exactly that of a rockstar. He was most recently in the news when President Trump aimed a slew of angry tweets at him and Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski after they criticized him. The tweets were something akin to drunken, angry texts from an ex in the middle of the night. Well, this morning, Scarborough announced he was leaving the Republican party, and more importantly, that his band has released a single.
That’s right, not only does he have a band, it’s at the point where they’re releasing singles. The song, “Welcome to the Monkey House”, by Scarborough, feels something like an early 2000’s theme song with PG-13 lyrics. “Everybody’s a little crazy / In the Monkey House. The gods are drunk and we’re all too lazy/ Don’t bother breaking out. Feel the chaos in short order/ Celebrate your new disorder. Hope is lost you’re in the monkey house.” It’s actually pretty good, and it’s clear that if Scarborough’s demographic wasn’t your parents, he would be breaking into The Wiggles’ market.
What’s even stranger is that this doesn’t seem to be some elaborate joke or one-off song. The press release sent out by RED MUSIC (actual company) claims that his group has plans to release 200 original songs over the coming years as part of a deal with Sony/RED MUSIC. It also recommends that you keep watch for their EP coming soon, titled Mystified. One can only hope that a couple Trump diss tracks are included. According to Billboard, “He’s the Bono of Broadcast. Scarborough actually has chops.”
If you’re curious what he sounds like live, worry no longer. He’s just performed his soon-to-be hit on Colbert, suit and all. I’m beginning to wonder if he ever takes the suit off. If you can’t wait for more, go ahead and join the newsletter.
