When it comes to the band Planetarium, there are a few things you should know. The band is Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner (The National) and James McAlister. Their self-titled album came out just this year (released on 4AD). And the album is inspired by space (hence the name).
What first started as a composition to be performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music is now a serious group on tour. Their album examines human consciousness (and yes, planets), taking listeners on an intense journey that’s captivating and inspiring and mysterious.
Of course the music is different than what these musicians play first and foremost, but that’s what makes it so interesting and highly artistic. It’s an album that makes you pay attention, and the fact that this show is outside, performed in the heat of summer underneath the stars will make the experience of it even more magical than a regular listen with your headphones.
