Danish composer/artist MYRKUR is back, and she’s announcing her highly anticipated sophomore offering off the heels of her slpending Masoleum, which include stellar tracks such as “Onde Born” and a cover of Bathory’s “Song to Hall Up High“. Her new album, Mareidt (translation: Nightmare) will be out this September 15 through Relapse records. The new album was recorded with producer Randall Dunn in between Copenhagen and Seattle, which will definitely serve as inspiration for the new sound.
The new album will “explore deeper into the mysterious and the feminine,” and feature compositions that further progress MYRKUR’s avant garde blend of metal along with lush melodies and tinges of dark folk. In the brief album trailer, MYRKUR showcases the creation of an unnamed track, featuring beautiful piano riffs and soulful singing, until everything explodes with a flood of sound: droning vocals, distorted guitars and drums come in with a stark contrast. “It’s like light and dark, you can’t have one without the other,” MYRKUR says.
As part of the recording process, she pushed her sound with new experiments and layers. Lyrics are written in multiple languages, special instruments such as the mandola, folk drums, nyckelharpa (an ancient Swedish harp), and Kulnin (an ancient Scandinavian herding call) all add new layers and sounds to an already experimental but seamless approach.
Along with the new album, MYRKUR will perform a sample of shows across the summer and fall. Check out the trailer and the tour dates below.
