It’s a common phrase in music when people say “I haven’t heard anyone who sounds like them.” It’s easy to say, and yes, sometimes it’s a little bit true. But in the case of The Avalanches–the funky electronic group from Australia–it’s very true.
The Avalanches have released just two albums in their career–the first called Since I Left You in 2000, and the seconds called Wildflower from 2016. Their discography has been sparse, to say the least, but their songs are so loaded with sound that you’ll forget all about how long it’s been because you’ll be so focused on your head spinning when listening to them. The Avalanches’ music is like an acid trip meets a drum and bass band at a circus, and then mix that with a funky dream and a movie scene where something really weird is happening, and then throw in the vibe of a warehouse dance party, and then you’ll begin to understand the dynamic of this band.
The energy and vast creativity of The Avalanches is mind-boggling and unparalleled, and the excitement of them playing music together should already be taking over your body. So, for old time’s sake, listen to songs like “Since I Left You” and “Frontier Psychiatrist” off their debut album, and then “Frankie Sinatra” and “The Wozard of Iz” off of their latest to really start getting in the mood. This show will be major.
