Chicago-based veteran post-rockers Tortoise has just announced several March tour dates, which lead up to their appearance at Big Ears festival in Knoxville, Tennessee. Even before the tour, they’ll be playing a show in their hometown of Chicago in January for the Tomorrow Never Knows festival.
Earlier this year in January, Tortoise released their 7th studio LP The Catastrophist, following up their favorably reviewed album Beacons of Ancestorship.
Tortoise is known for their almost entirely instrumental music, which takes influences from Krautrock, dub, minimalist, electronica, and most notably various jazz styles, to form a new type of post-rock. Of course, the members have their roots in the constantly vibrant Chicago music scene, playing in a variety of indie rock and punk outfits.
Some have called Tortoise one of the originators of post-rock who pushed the genre’s development and popularity, alongside other post-rock godfathers such as Slint or Trans Am. Others have compared the band with earlier progressive rock in the veins of Yes or King Crimson.
