Founded in the year 1987, The Tibet House US is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to presenting the Tibetan culture in an alluring and educating way at a time when it is presented with turmoil. The Tibetan people previously had adapted to reside on a one million square mile plateau at the highest landmass in the entire world. The altitude of this tiny plateau was averaging about 14,000 feet in altitude. Politically speaking, Tibet has a complex history that dates back to 127 B.C.E. After conquering parts of Nepal and India during the 7th and 9th centuries, the plateau united into a single country and the Tibetan Empire reached its peak. From the 6th-9th countries, the Tibetan kings had incorporated Buddhism into the Tibetan culture. Thus becoming a country that is devoted primarily to the ideologies of nonviolence and enlightenment. Moving forward, they suffered a lot of turmoil with various countries conquering them and using violence against this single dedicated country. Therefore, every single year there is a benefit hosted by the Tibet House US at the request of the Dali Lama in which it works to educate and advocate for Tibet.
This upcoming year, the Tibet House US Benefit will be partnering up the benefit with another special event: critically acclaimed composer Philip Glass’s 80th birthday party. Coinciding, with the 30th anniversary of the benefit itself. The benefit will be hosted at the Carnegie Hall in NYC, tickets are available on their website. Packaging prices range from $35-$200. Along with, a special Gala package which entails concert tickets and admission to a dinner reception for $500. Specifically, the Gala tickets can be purchased on the Tibet House US website.
Previously, the benefit held performers such as David Bowie, Lou Reed, Miley Cyrus, the Roots, Debbie Harry, the Flaming Lips, Paul Simon and more. This upcoming year however, the lineup was chosen from the one and only, Philip Glass. Glass has picked this year’s lineup which will encompass Benard Sumner, Phil Cunningham, Tom Chapman, Tenzin Choegyal, Jesse Paris Smith, Schorchio Quartet, Lauvinia Meiter, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and her band and finally, Lauire Anderson.
