Formed from the ashes of hardcore punk, dreamy shoegaze band Nothing is collaborating with fellow shoegazers True Widow, for a special, two-day Texas tour in Dallas and Austin. The dramatic history of Nothing’s formation is a story of violence and self-discovery, and no doubt had an influence on the bands critically acclaimed, early 2016 album, Tired of Tomorrow. Nothing’s existence stems from guitarist and vocalist Domenic “Nicky” Palermo. Palermo was a member of the hardcore punk outfit Horror Show. Although, the days of Horror Show quickly came to an end, when an aggravated assault altercation involving Palermo, led to his two-year imprisonment. Confused as to where life would take him, Palermo eventually started recording music again, after his release from prison.
The end of Palermo’s hardcore punk roots birthed the project Nothing. Inspired by his mother’s love of indie rock, Palermo formed the band in 2011, releasing a demo, and eventually pulling together a lineup of band members for the recording of the EP’s Suns and Lovers, and Downward Years to Come. Jumping from label to label during their EP days, Nothing seems to have settled on Relapse Records, who released their noisy debut record Guilty of Everything, which channeled the likes of 90’s shoegaze staples, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. To add to the growing list of traumatic events in the bands history, last year, after playing a show in Oakland, Palermo was jumped, leading to his hospitalization.
Nonetheless, as is the bands resilience, the sophomore album Tired of Tomorrow was finally released, despite the constant hardships following Palermo and Nothing. With a band history almost as intense as the music itself, Tired of Tomorrow lived up to its namesake, continuing the heavy and hazy, shoegaze rock sound that defines the band.
Nothing play their music loud and hard, cranking the volume to ordinance violating levels. Palermo feels that this is one way to stay true to their punk roots. You can hear just how loud Nothing can get on December 1st at The Sidewinder.
