Netflix has just released a sneak peek for their recent Marvel collaboration Luke Cage. The featurette focuses on the show’s music supervisors Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad explaining the musical choices they made for the project. They aimed to create an original, urban, and soulful feel in the show through the use music with a “90’s hip hop vibe”. Method Man and A$ap Ferg also had a hand in the process.
Each episode is titled after various Gang Starr songs. Some of the titles include “Soliloquy of Chaos” and “Moment of Truth”. The influential East Coast hip hop duo accurately represent what New York hip hop was. As the show takes place in Harlem, Gang Starr song titles are the perfect accompaniment to each episode. The series developer Cheo Hodari Coker stated that the musicality of the series would differentiate it from other Marvel projects. He added
“It defines itself through sound that you can feel when you’re watching the scenes, whether it’s something that’s actually a song that they’re playing or actually just the pulse of the music that they choose thematically.”
Luke Cage is based on the Marvel character of the same name. Mike Colter plays Cage, a crime fighting ex-con who has superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. Co-stars include Theo Rossi, Simone Missick, Alfre Woodard and more. The show premieres September 30th on Netflix.
